HR and Management Information Systems

3 Types of Information Systems I will use throughout my career are:

Computer- In my future profession, I will need to use a computer to research competitor's offerings, posting job ads online, selecting and recruiting applicants, and to use as communication with others in the organization.

Computer Software- Software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel I expect to use a lot for typing letters and memos, record keeping and organizing information, and also writing documents to use as communication as well.

Punch Clocks- In businesses that uses punch clocks, I would need to learn how to use one to keep track of employee hours so I can determine proper payroll.

My Business Process

The Business Process consists of Activites, Resources, Facilites, and Information.

EXAMPLE: Today I bought grocercies at a local grocery store, one of the items being milk. When I brought the milk to the cash registar (Activity) and the cashier (Resources) scanned the item. After being the milk was purchased, the updated inventory (Information) status was sent electronically to the manufacturing warehouse (Facilites) .

Information System Used Within a 24-Hour Period

An information system (IS) is used by all businesses to keep track of sales, purchases, data, etc. An information system contains Five Components:

  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Data
  • People
  • Procedure
An real-life example (which I have done within the last 24 hours) includes purchasing items online.

EXAMPLE: Today, I logged on to Dell Canada's shopping website (http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/search_generic?c=ca&l=en&s=gen&~ck=pn&kw=dell.+canada&dgc=ST&cid=3852&lid=1398403) and I purchased a laptop case online.

The process (Procedure) began when I (People) searched and selected which laptop case would best satisfy my needs (Hardware). After I selected which one I was going to purchase, I dragged the item into my online shopping cart. After taxes and shipping fees, the website transferred to a refreshed page with my total (Data) displayed and an option of delivery. I purchased the item with my Visa Card, which then asked for my credit card number (Software). I then entered my data and the procedure was finished.

My Personal Goals

1) My first goal is to improve my computer and typing skills. I wish to learn the proper technique for typing for when I acheive my business career. Also, I would like to learn how to use specialized software that help input, display, and chart data. Knowing this software will also help for my future career in Human Resources in terms of payroll, compensation, and record-keeping.

On-line typing practice: http://www.customtyping.com/

2) And my second personal goal is to teach myself how to be more organized. I've already started this process with keeping paperwork in the correct binder, labelling, and daily organizing my things. This is important for me to know when I join the workforce because HR needs to keep employee files neat and organized, especially so anybody in the organization can read them.

My Awards and Honours

Honour Roll and Honour Society
I received Honour Roll (overall percentage of 80%) in high school for all 8 semesters. With every 2 semesters, if Honour Roll is made, a Honour Society certificate is given. I recieved a certificate for all 4 years.

Award of Champions
I received the Award of Champions in my last year of high school for being hard-working and a critical thinker in my World Issues class.

English Award
I received an English award in my last year of high school for having the highest overall mark out of all graduting students of 2010.

These awards demonstrates that I am hard-working and I do my best in all my tasks. These skills will help me succeed in my career and achieve my business goals.

My Employment History

The only field of work I have been employment in has been healthcare. My place of employment incudes:

1) Metro Pharmacy- I was originally hired to assist the front shop manager with odering, organizing, and learning about over-the-counter medical products that the pharmacy carried. From there, I was promoted to work as a cashier for the pharmacy, and was assigned to order and organize prescription drugs. After 1 year of working as a cashier, I was then promoted as a pharmacy technican. With this position, I had to accurately enter prescription data into the computer software, and then properly fill the prescriptions.

This employment showed me the importance of knowing every aspect of the job. In HR, it would be my job to know the whole organization, and it's contacts. As well, it taught me how to properly learn and develop my skills that would result in me getting promotions, and moving up within the company.

2) Shoppers Drug Mart- After learning the pharmacy technician skills at Metro Pharmacy, I then applied to Shoppers Drug Mart as a part-time technician. What I learned within SDM is the aspects of  being in a union. At one point during my employment, I was part of a union and learned most of the rules and regulations that comes with it. This knowledge will help me in my business career because I may be employed with a company whose workers are unionized, and the knowledge will help me be successful in human resources.

My Career Goals

My career goals in business include:

1) Attain a position as a human resources administrator with a company.

2) Transfer into the staffing coordination team.

3) Become a human resources specialist in recruitment.

4) Acquire a position in management with the company.

To prepare for these goals, I am currently enrolled in the Human Resources program at Sheridan College. While attending Sheridan College, I plan on networking with those with connections in the industry. These connections include students within the program, as well as professors. Hopefully these contacts could lead to possible job positions or at least job referrals.

As well, I am preparing for my career goals by selecting to do co-op after the third year of my program. This will hopefully be my first step into my ideal business career.
