Information System Used Within a 24-Hour Period

An information system (IS) is used by all businesses to keep track of sales, purchases, data, etc. An information system contains Five Components:

  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Data
  • People
  • Procedure
An real-life example (which I have done within the last 24 hours) includes purchasing items online.

EXAMPLE: Today, I logged on to Dell Canada's shopping website (http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/search_generic?c=ca&l=en&s=gen&~ck=pn&kw=dell.+canada&dgc=ST&cid=3852&lid=1398403) and I purchased a laptop case online.

The process (Procedure) began when I (People) searched and selected which laptop case would best satisfy my needs (Hardware). After I selected which one I was going to purchase, I dragged the item into my online shopping cart. After taxes and shipping fees, the website transferred to a refreshed page with my total (Data) displayed and an option of delivery. I purchased the item with my Visa Card, which then asked for my credit card number (Software). I then entered my data and the procedure was finished.
